How do Timestrip® s track time?
Timestrips® are patented disposable smart labels that monitor how long a product has been open or how long it has been in use. They can measure elapsed time from minutes up to over a year, in the freezer, refrigerator, at normal ambient or even at elevated temperatures.
At the heart of the Timestrip® is a special porous membrane through which a food-grade liquid diffuses. Timestrips® are activated by squeezing the small blister on the top or bottom of each strip (depending on which strip you use) which moves the liquid into direct contact with the membrane. The laws of physics then take over and the liquid diffuses through the membrane at a consistent rate calibrated for distinct temperature environments common to food and other products’ storage and safety.
How do I use my Timestrips® in the kitchen?
For best results, activate the Timestrip® immediately before storing your food at the recommended temperature.
Before you use your food item again after storing, check the Timestrip® for elapsed time. If the appropriate day mark has been reached – shown in the window portion of your Timestrip®, then expiration has been reached.
How long should I store my food items?
Sell by, Use By, and Best By information can be confusing and what about leftovers where no labeling is present. Even with a label, how can you remember when you first opened the container? To help with all these food storage questions, we have created, together with our users, a shelf-life database. If you search the database but don’t find the food item you need you can either add your own from another source, so its there next time you need it, or you can email us and we will research the item for you. The next time you return, your item will be added for your benefit as well as the benefit of the Timestrip® community. All items are double checked for errors or omissions by our food editors, for your safety.
The database will also help guide you to which Timestrip® to use for each food item you wish to store. What if I take my food out of the fridge or freezer for a longer period of time but then put it back?
Fridge and freezer Timestrips® are temperature sensitive. Just as food will deteriorate more quickly in warm conditions, once activated Timestrips® will advance at a faster rate if left out of the chilled environment for longer periods.
Do my Timestrips® need batteries?
Timestrips® are single use and recyclable, so you never need to worry about batteries. And for less than the price of a postage stamp, you can be protecting all of your valuable foodstuffs individually at the same time.
What happens if a Timestrip® is punctured?
The liquid inside a Timestrip® is non-toxic. If tampered with, a Timestrip® may leak and will not function properly. If the liquid comes in contact with the skin, wash with soap and water. If the liquid comes in contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water. For more information, contact Timestrip Customer Service at help@timestrip.com.
